Are you afraid of Tsunami ?

Are you afraid of the disaster happened in Japan ?
Do you expect such an event at your home place or workplace ?
How will you respond ?

We are in a world where danger or peril is around the corner.
There are natural disasters and calamities.

There are accidents due to human and mechanical failures which also we can not avoid.

There are accidents or dangers done by evil men.

There are sicknesses and diseases.

There are also failures in businesses, exams and jobs.

We are in a world where everything is not certain except of course the promises of God which stands forever.

The Question is:
        Are we protected from these?
        What does the Bible teach us?

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty
I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
If you make the Most High your dwelling—
even the LORD, who is my refuge—
then no harm will befall you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
(Psalm 91:1-16)

The Security of the Promises of God

 “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”  (Genesis 28:15)

       The LORD is your keeper;
              The LORD is your shade on your right hand.
       The sun will not smite you by day,
              Nor the moon by night.
       The LORD will protect you from all evil;
              He will keep your soul.
       The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in
              From this time forth and forever
              (Psalm 121:5-8)

What shall keep us out of God’s Loving Protection ?

But the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban, for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some of the things under the ban, therefore the anger of the LORD burned against the sons of Israel.   (Joshua 7:1)

The men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of their men, and pursued them from the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them down on the descent, so the hearts of the people melted and became as water.
                                                                                                                                                                                           (Joshua 7:5 )

Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord GOD, why did You ever bring this people over the Jordan, only to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing to dwell beyond the Jordan!  (Joshua  7:7)
                                                                                                                                                                             So the LORD said to Joshua, “Rise up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face? (Joshua 7:10)

“Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things under the ban and have both stolen and deceived. Moreover, they have also put them among their own things.  (Joshua 7:11)

“Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, for they have become accursed. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst.  (Joshua 7:12)

God alone is our refuge and shield at all times.
He alone we should reach out first and put our trust.
We should keep ourselves from the things that not please God

Tsunami , earthquake, Death or loss of our beloved ones or anything can happen at any time any where in the world. We are not excluded from these. But ,we will not be disappointed or frustrated just because a disaster rather will continue our journey to the eternity unaffected as that wise man who built house upon the rock.

So be like that wise man..

Keep well your foundation (faith)

Why should I believe in Jesus Christ ?

See this story,

A young driver was once stopped by a police officer. He was a good driver and as far as he knew he had done nothing wrong.

The police officer said, “I pulled you over because you were going 65 KmPH through a school zone. There were warning signs that the speed limit was 30 KmPH and you ignored them all.” Just like the driver had warning signs, God has given us clear warning signs in the Bible and also through the Catholic Church. They are called the Ten Commandments of God and The Commandments of Catholic Church.

Have you ever told a lie, stolen something, or used God’s name as a swear word? The answer is ‘yes’ for most of us. Listen to what the Bible says

Whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. (James 2:10)

God is saying that by breaking one Commandment we have sinned and will be held accountable for breaking all of them, including adultery and murder. God’s judgment for our sin is death.  (Banishment to hell because He will not allow sin in His presence) (Romans 6:23)

If the story ends here, there is no hope for us……

BUT IT DOESN'T END HERE

An innocent man approached a judge and volunteered to be executed in the place of a convicted murderer. The judge consented. The next day the judge told the convict he had a decision to make. “An innocent man has been put to death in your place. If you will accept his payment for your crime, you are free to go. If you will not accept his payment, you will be executed for your crime. Which do you choose?” Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was sinless but voluntarily gave his life to pay the penalty for your sins and mine. (God’s judgment for our sin is death). Three days later he rose from the dead.

God showed his great love for us by sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:8)

The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

As a result of Jesus’ death in your place, you have two choices: Receive both God’s pardon for your sins and eternal life by repenting (sensing your sinfulness and desiring to turn from it) and  placing your trust in the Lord Jesus.

OR

Reject both God’s pardon for your sins and eternal life by trusting in anyone or anything other than Jesus to make you acceptable to God, thus bearing the penalty for breaking God’s law yourself.

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son of God will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him. (John 3:36)

Knowing about Jesus doesn’t mean you believe in Jesus…. Just as entering a garage won’t make you a mechanic; just attending a church without any sacramental life won’t make you a Christian. If you would like to receive God’s pardon for your sins and the gift of eternal life, you should live in Him and must accept Him as your savior.

Consider the prayer:
“Jesus, I believe you paid the penalty for my sins when you died on the cross and rose from the dead. I want to turn from my sins and place my trust in you as my Lord. I am willing to follow you the rest of my life. Thank you for the gift of eternal life. Amen.”

You should develop a holy life.

Skydivers demonstrate their belief in their parachutes when they jump from the plane. Followers of Jesus demonstrate their belief in Him through different ways like blogging or even through their lief when God’s Spirit changes their thoughts and desires.

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17)

God says, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you.” (Ezekiel 36:26)

Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13)

The desire of real followers of Jesus is to live a life worthy of the Lord, pleasing Him in every way, bearing fruit in every good work, and growing in the knowledge of God. (Colossians 1:10).

BE VIRULENT AS HIV

 T
hough HIV is a deadly threat to humanity, it’s pretty interesting to see how it behaves inside a cell.  This virus is a nonliving genetic material outside the cell. But when it infects a cell it takes control of all the cellular activities. It simply gets into the nucleus and redirects the protein synthesis for its own survival. It doesn’t consider the need of the cell. It doesn’t get too much attached with the cell, i.e. it is free to come out of the cell after completing its own synthesis of required proteins and genetic material.

That’s HIV. It gets into the nucleus and becomes the master of the cell; something from outside taking control of the cell.

That’s why I said it’s really, really, interesting.

Let me say something spiritually. According to St. Thomas Aquinas ‘in the hierarchical structure of beings of the world Angels, the compounds of essence and existence, exists on the peak of creation, and then come men, we all, the Homo sapiens sapiens, whose substantial form is the spirit, which is united with material. The man is the sum total of this merely corporeal and spiritual being. The spirit can exist independently of the body. However, the more sensitive beings, the animals, or poorly vegetative beings, the plants, have a corruptible form of spirit that cannot exist independently of the material.’ That is, we have a spiritual existence outside the body unlike other animals and plants. The maximum level of expectation for these lower creatures is only up to humans. That is, these all are created for us, not only for you and me, but also for the coming generations.

It may be contrary to your traditional religious beliefs. But, let me just make my point clear…

Who are we ???

In contrary to the Platonian concept or some non Semitic religious views of man, the man can not be fragmented into a body and a spirit. That is the man is not body + spirit which would make of him two individuals; which is a misconception. Here the spirit is not something which is imprisoned in the body and willing to be released. Instead, both form a substantial union and this substantial union is a relation by which two substances are so disposed that they form one. It forms the person “You”. It is not our spirit that loves, or our body that eats, but "We" that do both. It can be explained by a general theory. That is, it is neither "matter" nor "form", but only the composite, called a substance. Similarly the man is neither the spirit nor the body but only the substantial union of the spirit and body.

I am talking about human beings, that is about you and me, the totality of body and spirit. The man has both bodily as well as spiritual features. Both of them are dominant. Then, there arises a question whether any of these two needs to be predominant. If so, which is the predominant one? You may wonder why I don’t use the traditional concept of mind because the mind is nothing but a cluster of nuclei in CNS, which is again a part of the body.

It’s very clear that the body together with mind is of earthly origin. We get it from our parents; it dies, degrades into basic elements, then gets incorporated into the food chain, and it may reach into our parents and come out as another body. This is not reincarnation (In fact, there is nothing like reincarnation) but natural way of processing of material. There is nothing to add to this cycle from outside. But the spiritual existence does not perish and undergo any recycling but is unique to each one of us. The Catholic Church dogmatically teaches that the man gets his spiritual existence at the very beginning of conception itself. So that man can not be completely destroyed by any means at any phase of growth.

The death ???

And the death; which is not an end of anything, but is a transformation. This is not like as we end somewhere and begin as another, but like something changing its state into another. i.e., like childhood to adulthood. And in this transformation we lose our earthly body the spirit continues existing as it was before but, without body. This is applicable only to humans because only their spirit has an extracorporeal existence. On the Day of Judgment the spirit forms a substantial union with its heavenly body.  Yes, we will be transformed as Jesus Christ, our savior, did. Then you will have your heavenly body, but you, the person, will be same. This heavenly body will be totally different from the earthly body. Remember, after the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the two disciples who accompanied Him till Emmaus couldn’t recognize Him, because He was with His Heavenly body.

“There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another.” (1 Corinthians 15:40)

The eternal life ???

We are created by God, our Father, for being with Him in Heaven. We are sent to this world not only to go through a “to do list” but to live with our spirit so as to maintain the spiritual features as such it was created with. As we are going to be raised to a supernatural state, as a son of God and member of the Mystical Body of which Christ is the Head, which is the eternal enjoyment of the beatific vision. So it is obvious that we should develop our spiritual features; because the language of the place where we go after transformation is of love which is a feature of spirit. So it is very important to train our spiritual features before we transform. Not just important, but mandatory; because witout those features we can not enjoy the everlasting love. Denials of this training result in forfeiting of His love. And that absence of His love is called nothing but the hell.

Now I needn’t answer which one of these feature need to be predominant. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am not joking. This is a matter of our existence.

That is why it’s interesting to take HIV as a role model of life. Here the mind, body and the spirit is compared to the nucleus of cell, the cell and the HIV respectively. (Just consider the mind as an interconnecting link between body and spirit). As same as the working of HIV in a cell, the spirit should also be able to tame the body and mind to develop spiritual features. We may have to sacrifice our bodily pleasures for attaining this goal. Never mind it, because these spiritual features are the one which help us stand after transformation. I said it as just one factor because the salvation is not our achievement, but a free gift from God. This is somewhat like UPSC considering the language papers for civil service examination.

So I say the spirit should be virulent even much more than an HIV to develop the spiritual features.

That is what Saint Paul says.

“So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  For what the flesh desires is opposed  to the Spirit, and what  the Spirit desires  is opposed  to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to law. .”(Galatians 5:16-18)

So what are the desires or features of body?

“Now the works  of the flesh  are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God”. (Galatians 5:18-21)

And the features of spirit are..

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law”. (Galatians 5:22-23)

And then how will we behave if we have these spiritual features?

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.  The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:13)

So be virulent enough as Human immunodeficiency virus to plant your life back into eternity.

POINTS FOR REFLECTION

  1. Is salvation possible just because of  we have (even if) completely developed our spiritual features?
  2. Who is Jesus Christ ? and how did he make salvation easy ?
  3. Is human spirit originating from God and returning back to Him? If so ,Are both creator and creatures  same?
  4. What does happen to the spirit until the day of judgement ? is it wandering on the earth ?
  5. Is salvation possible for those who are not baptised or outside catholic church ?
